1260 UNIVERSES

Post by angusmuirdesign »

Hi

We have a project coming up and just wanted to check in on any hidden pitfalls as it is the most universes we have worked with.

We are driving SPI pixels on 3 large 'screens'. 1260 universes.

These screens will receive a live video feed from a media server.

Wondering if it is safer to split across 3 machines and have 3 separate feeds?
Or one machine would suffice.

Do you have any recommendation for specification on a suitable desktop to build?
Thank you in advance

Hello angusmuirdesign,

Both options are possible.

Option 1:
Working with one PC with the MADRIX 5 license maximum.
The MADRIX 5 license maximum offers the possiblilty to output up to 2048 DMX universe. That means you will create a big patch which consits of the 3 different "SPI Screens". Furthermore MADRIX will receive the information for all 3 screens from the media server. It will be possible to recieve it via a capture card or NDI.
To convert and output the received video stream the following PC components are recommended:
  • CPU: At least 12 Threads with a base freqnecy higher than 3 Ghz.
  • GPU: A dedicated NVIDIA Geforce RTX GPU is recommended
  • RAM: At least 16 GB fast RAM like DDR5
  • Motherboard: A motherboard which can handle the fast speed
  • Network card: To output 1260 universe of data we recommend to use a high performance server network card. It would be also possible to split the output to several NICs to decrease the traffice per network. MADRIX is able to handle multiple NIC
  • Capture Card: Depending how the data from the media server needs to be captured a high quality caputre card is necessarry. MADRIX can work with every capture cards which can be isntalled in Windows.
Option 2:
Working with 3 PCs and every PC is respondsible for one "SPI Screen". When we assume the screens have the same size, every screen will consits of 420 uinverses and thus a MADRIX 5 license ultimate needs to be connected at every PC. Now the media server needs to split the data and send the desired signal to every PC.
In that case the following PC components are recommended:
  • CPU: At least 8 Threads with a base freqnecy higher than 3 Ghz.
  • GPU: A dedicated NVIDIA Geforce RTX GPU is recommended
  • RAM: At least 16 GB fast RAM like DDR5
  • Motherboard: A motherboard which can handle the fast speed
  • Network card: A high qualtiy network card should be used
  • Capture Card: Depending how the data from the media server needs to be captured a high quality caputre card is necessary.
Both options have advantages and disadvantages. In case of Option 1 you will need to configure only one PC and the data from the media server needs to be to one receiver. But in case this PC will be power off by any reason the full installation can't output any lighting data. This will be the advantage of optin 2 because of splitting the output to 3 PC and if one PC fails the other PCs respectively screens can work. But the workload to create the system is a bit higher.
